Pre-operative assessment

Some patients benefit from seeing an anaesthetist well before their operation, for example if they have heart or lung disease, diabetes, sleep apnoea, a previous problem with anaesthesia, or a family history of anaesthetic reactions. An early assessment allows time to plan, arrange tests and improve your health before surgery.

My experience

  • One of three consultants who ran the high-risk anaesthesia clinic and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) service at Princess Alexandra Hospital (2015–2021)
  • Peri-operative optimisation and multidisciplinary meetings for complex vascular and major colorectal surgery
  • Consultant in critical care since 2010
  • Royal College of Anaesthetists representative for NAP7, the national audit of perioperative cardiac arrest

Anaesthetic consultation before surgery

I see patients for a consultation before surgery at the hospitals where I practise. Your surgeon can refer you, or you can contact me directly. After the consultation, I’ll write to you and your surgeon with my assessment, any tests needed and recommendations for your anaesthetic.

Your hospital will also carry out its own pre-assessment before admission.
